General
Why AltCtrlOrg?
Some of us did feel some attendees, speakers and/or sponsors self-censor at an official WordCamp. With recent events in the WordPress project, we’ve seen being blocked for discussing a topic is a valid concern.
We believe this is not OK within an Open Source project. We stand by the promise of inclusivity and diversity, in both people and topics.
Some discussions matter and should be had.
How do I get to Basel, Switzerland?
By Train: Basel has excellent rail connections. From Zurich Airport, it’s about 1 hour by train. From Geneva Airport, the journey takes around 3 hours. If traveling from Frankfurt International Airport in Germany, expect a train ride of about 3 hours. Paris Charles de Gaulle offers high-speed rail options to Basel in about 3.5 hours.
By Car: Driving times from nearby international hubs are also convenient. Zurich Airport is about 1.5 hours away by car, Geneva Airport takes approximately 3 hours, and Frankfurt International Airport is about a 3-hour drive. Paris Charles de Gaulle is farther, taking roughly 5 hours by car.
By Air: Basel is served by EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL), just 15 minutes from the city center. Other international airports in Switzerland include Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA), offering flights to major global hubs like New York, London, Dubai, and Hong Kong, as well as extensive European connections.

How much does a ticket cost?

Yes. Registration is mandatory, we are now full but you can fill the Waiting list form.

Schedule & apply as a speaker or panel member
For the main schedule information, check our Schedule page.
Can I apply as a speaker?
Sure! In Basel, our focus will be on free speech and governance in Open Source and specifically in the WordPress project. If you think or want to check if your talk proposal is a match: send us an email!
As we’re not an official event, and this is our first one, we do not have a formal process in place. Just reach out to us if you want to discuss a potential application, an idea or if you’d like to join the panel about the Future of WordPress.
What kind of talks are you looking for?
Any talk that matches our focus on free speech & governance in Open Source.
We’re seeking talks that wouldn’t typically make it onto the WordCamp schedule, including:
- Inspiration from other CMS platforms or open-source communities.
- Lessons from industries outside WordPress that can inform or challenge our ecosystem.
- Explorations of organizational strategies, unique workflows, or creative collaboration models.
- Discussions about the future of open-source, inclusivity, or ethical technology.
- Talk from people unable to participate in other events
If your idea challenges convention, celebrates innovation, or introduces perspectives we haven’t yet explored, we want to hear from you.
The talk format is 15 mins + Q&A.
Do you cover expenses for speakers?
Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to cover speaker expenses such as travel, accommodation, or other associated costs.
We deeply appreciate the time, effort, and resources our speakers invest in making this event possible. As a new initiative organized on short notice, we are working within tight constraints, including limited resources, administrative complexities, and the unpredictable nature of launching something fresh within the community.
Looking ahead, we are committed to exploring ways to support our speakers in future events. While this isn’t feasible right now, we value your understanding and your willingness to share your voice with the community during these early stages.
We will offer our speakers:
- Food will be provided at the event to ensure you’re well taken care of.
- A token gift of free swag to show our appreciation.
Is there a speaker agreement?
Not extremely formal. But we do expect our speakers to:
- Follow the Code of Conduct.
- Meet deadlines and deliver your presentation slides on time (when relevant).
- Grant Alt Ctrl Org permission to record, photograph, and share your talk.
Will the sessions be recorded?
Maybe, we’re not sure yet. If you are a podcaster and are willing to help record the sessions: please do contact us!

Finances & organisation
Check out our main pages for the introduction of the team, our mission & vision and our finances (proposed budget) and our Open Collective page.
What is the governance structure for Alt Ctrl Org ?
At the moment, it’s just a couple of individuals. We don’t have the time yet to set up a foundation, but the intention is to do so over time.
We have however set up a collective for Alt Ctrl Org on the Open Collective platform where you can see all of our accounts with full transparency and chime in yourself if you want.
We want to discuss future independent events and want to reach out with others wanting to organise independent WordPress-related events, figuring out together how to proceed.

Open Collective: Are there payment fees?
Yes there are. From each donation, we’ll pay +/- 2% payment fees & 8% OC fees. Open Collective takes a flat fee of 8% on each incoming transaction for their work as our fiscal host (the one doing all legal paperwork for us) and for us to use their platform to be as transparent as we can about all income and expenses.
For example: a donation of €15 paid will be +/- €13,50 net depending on the choice of payment provider.
Open Collective: Can I pay the fees myself?
You can make your gross donation a net donation by adding the 10% fees (2% payment fees & OCC’s 8% processing fees) to your donation amount.
Donating €550 for a €500 sponsorship will give Alt Ctrl Org the full €500 to spend.
Open Collective: What is a “Platform tip”?
This tip will go straight to funding and maintaining the OCC platform itself, see https://docs.opencollective.com/help/financial-contributors/platform-tips.
If you do nothing, it is added. You can edit the amount if you like or, if you want to remove the tip, you can check “I don’t want to contribute to Open Collective”.

What would you do with surplus funds?
We are yet to confirm what we would do with any surplus funds if there were to be any, but we will finalise that decision before reaching any surplus.
What would you do with potential deficits?
We would have to pay them we guess? 🙂
